South and west of Frederikshavn spreads an impressive hilly landscape, which testifies to the mighty forces of the last ice age.
Here you will find, among other things, Gærum Bakker, which is not a specific place, but rather a characteristic of the area around Gærum. It offers a hilly terrain with many beautiful views. Gærum Bakker cuts through the landscape from Øksnebjerg in the east to the Vildfred hills at Gærum, to Kig Ud and Guddalen in the north.
Vendsyssel's second highest point
Look Out is a point you almost have to experience. With its 122 meters, Kig Ud is Vendsyssel's second highest point, and the view at the top is among the most beautiful in Vendsyssel.
From Kig Ud you have a 360-degree view of the entire area from Skagen in the north, Sæby in the east and Jyske Ås in the south. To the west, you can sense the area's very hilly landscape. Forests, towns and fields and in a few places some of the many burial mounds in the area. A trip to Look Out around sunset time is recommended, as the view makes the experience very special
The nature trails bring you close to the beautiful nature
In 2008, the citizens of Gærum decided that the beautiful nature that surrounds the town should be more easily accessible to everyone, both the residents of the town, but also to people from outside who just want good nature experiences.
Therefore, today there are 5 marked hiking routes around Gærum. The shortest route is 2 km, while the longest is 10 km.
Common to all the routes is that they take you through the hilly landscape, spiced with cultural-historical passages and points along the way. On the routes, you have the opportunity to pass Vendsyssel's second highest point, forests, valleys, open spaces, church, memorial from World War II and Vendsyssel's only preserved passage grave. You can find a more in-depth description of the routes and maps of the different routes here
