Did you know that the blackbird typically lives between 5 and 10 years? Many other birds in the garden, such as the house sparrow and starling, only live to be about 3 years old.
The blackbird
Family: Thrush
Weight: 80-110 g
Lifestyle: Breeding pair
Food: Insects, snails and worms, berries, fruits and seeds.
The blackbird is Denmark's most numerous breeding bird. In winter, the number of blackbirds in Denmark is even higher than the rest of the year. This is due to the fact that a large number of blackbirds from the Nordic countries migrate to Denmark to overwinter.
The blackbird can be recognized by its completely dark plumage. However, there is a difference between the birds.
Males have a completely black plumage and an orange or yellow beak, whereas females are more brown and have a dark beak.
Living with people
Blackbirds have become accustomed to living close to humans. In the forest, the birds typically build nests in thickets, on stumps or in ravines. In gardens, they often build nests in the hedge. The nesting females have become so accustomed to humans that their nests are also placed in outbuildings and carports.
Blackbirds are adept at imitating other people's sounds. Blackbird males can, among other things, imitate each other's song motifs. Likewise, the juveniles can take over the parents' songs. Blackbirds have become accustomed to living and moving around with humans. In fact, to such an extent that some birds imitate man-made sounds.
