Øster Hornum-Skvium
Frendrup Nihøje
Frendrup Nihøje is a protected area in Himmerland. At one of the highest points in Himmerland, proudly raised 105 meters above sea level, you will find this unique place with a great view. Originally, it was the site of nine burial mounds from the Bronze Age, as the name suggests, but today only seven of them can be found.
The area not only contains historical burial mounds but also hosted the first settlements in Himmerland. Clear Iron Age fields and ancient hollow ways with wheel tracks have been found in the uncultivated area.
When you visit Frendrup Nihøje, you sense how the past and present meet in a special way.

Højris Mill
Tucked away in the Sønderup River valley in Himmerland, you'll discover Højris Mill, a part of Skivum Nørrekrat. This is where you can be captivated by the stunning natural scenery of the mill and the quintessential Jutland oak scrub that enhances the landscape.
The mill farm, situated at the heart of the region, has served as a watermill from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century and as a gathering spot for local farmers. Over time, the farm shifted its focus to forestry, leading to the planting of more oak scrubs. Today, this allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature's beauty in the area.
You can wander through the diverse natural environment featuring oak scrubs and the meandering Sønderup River, which snakes its way through the terrain. The oak woodland is particularly unique due to efforts to restore the ancient Danish forest where domestic animals once freely grazed on flora and trees. This practice gave the forest its distinctive character, which is rare to find elsewhere. Amidst the oak trees, you can also encounter aspen, rowan, and blueberries. In the more open meadow regions along the river, juniper and heather are prevalent.
With round-the-clock access to the primitive campsite, you have the chance to sleep under the stars and awaken to the ambient sounds of nature. The campsite also provides a composting toilet and a fire pit. Fishing in the river is prohibited, and please remember to keep your dog leashed.
